The Ohio State Bar Foundation (OSBF) will host a symposium in March unpacking the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on the legal landscape. Sessions will explore the implications of AI use from law school classrooms to courtrooms, with a focus on the intersection of AI and ethics for practicing legal professionals. This informative event will take place at the Ohio Statehouse on March 19 and bring together experts for memorable and illuminating discussions on AI’s influence on the law and explore what we can expect in the future.
The day will kick off with a keynote delivered by Jeremy Kahn, AI Editor, Fortune Magazine and author of “Mastering AI: A Survival Guide to Our Superpowered Future.” Kahn will take a deep dive into the impact of AI not only in law, but in society, and share insights into the wonders and dangers of this emerging technology.
Kahn’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion, “Practicing Law in the 21st Century,” featuring AI and legal experts including Hon. Scott Schlegel of the Louisiana Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and Rebecca Fordon of The Ohio State University. Panelists will explore how law schools are preparing future lawyers, the ethical considerations surrounding the integration of AI, and how modern law firms are adapting their practices to responsibly leverage this emerging technology.
In the afternoon, a second panel discussion, “Justice or Algorithm? Exploring AI's Role in the Public Legal Sphere,” will feature multiple experts sharing their expertise on AI and its ability to increase accessibility, as well as the support and risks AI can offer as co-counsel. The panel will cap off with a discussion on tackling AI bias when it comes to the law.
“Each year, the OSBF Fellows class presents a symposium on a pivotal topic in law,” said Susan Choe, OSBF Trustee and Executive Director of Ohio Legal Help. “We are all experiencing the acceleration and impact of AI, which is just one of the reasons I’m looking forward to speaking and sharing my perspective during the second panel.”
And, in addition to the programming outlined above, the symposium will feature a first-of-its-kind live deposition segment presented by a panel of legal professionals and an AI bot, where participants can make their own decision and vote for the most effective deposition during the closing session, “AI at the Table: AI-Powered Depositions.”
“This is a day filled with discussions that technology enthusiasts and law professionals alike won’t want to miss,” said Jonathan Hollingsworth, Board President of the Ohio State Bar Foundation. “Together, we will look to the future and set the bar higher for ethical standards in law with regard to AI and move forward toward a fairer, more equitable legal system.”
